Sandwiched
between two
tough runs,
lies a rare little gem. Although only two miles long, the middle
section of Silver Fork is roadside with beautiful High Sierra scenery,
yet maintains a remote feel. The rapids tend to be boulder gardens with
multiple lines. If you look forward to Troublemaker on the South Fork
American, and enjoy being challenged by Edwards to Purdons or
Chamberlains, you'll enjoy running laps on this run. It's nice to
combine with a run on Kyburz since it's in the same area.
Daniel
Brasuell heads into the put-in rapid, possibly the toughest of the run.
Shannamar Dewey heads into the same.
Logistics: Silver Fork is a tributary to the South
Fork
American near the small town of Kyburz. On Highway 50, Just upstream of
Kyburz, take a right on Silver Fork Road, and go a few miles up the
road until you see China Flat Campground on the right. Immediately past
China Flat is day parking at a bridge, the take out. From here continue
upstream ~2 miles to the next bridge where there is parking on river
left. We did the run with Kyburz around 1,200cfs and thought it to be a
medium flow.
