Nikkor
135mm f/2 DC
Really just some rambling and whining. Shot about a thousand
images with the Nikkor 135mm f/2 DC at a wedding. It amazes me how out
of touch the big camera makers can be with their audience. I found the
Nikkor 135mm f/2 DC to be an incredible lens. I'd consider buying
one for $1,500. The image quality is exceptional. Except the damn thing
is pretty outdated. The current model has been out for 22 years at this
point. The auto-focus shows that age. It can't even track a fast
walking person, let alone children. The auto-focus speed and accuracy
is about on par with a Sigma or Tamron. It works some of the time, but
there are missed shots where the lens simply can't keep up. On a D700,
not an underpowered body for auto focus capabilities. The lack of VR is
really appalling in a portrait lens of this class. Keeping your shutter
above 1/125 when you could easily drop to 1/50 in lower light is a true
shame.
Take on the other hand the $6,000 AF-S Nikkor 200mm f/2. It came out in 2004 and was updated in 2010. The only thing they added was the newer VRII and Nano Crystal Coating, on a lens not prone to flare. Do they really think that previous owners of the $5,000 200mm AF-S VR will spend $6,000 to move up to the 200mm AF-S VRII N? I don't see how they could benefit from too many more sales of the new lens with the update, when many other lenses like the manual focus 50mm f/1.2 (still in production!) 20mm f/2.8, 24mm f2.8, 28mm f/2.8 and both the 105mm DC and 135mm DC could desperately use an update. And
a bit of what you really came for. Will Pruett makes a first descent on
