You can plan good lighting. You can even plan great lighting if you know an area well. But you can't plan special lighting. The kind of lighting that takes multiple circumstances and only lasts a minute or two at best. Here we were kayaking in cold weather, it snowed the night before but cleared up in the afternoon. We're on our way home and the melting snow and damp pavement warming in the sunlight put a heavy mist in the air. The tree is lit up by water condensation, while the sun was moments away from dropping over the horizon. Capturing these moments isn't just luck. You have to keep your eyes open and not be in too much of a hurry and pass on by. It's also the previous experience of shooting in a wide range of situations, the preparation of always having a camera with you, combined with the technical ability to capture the scene. Retrospectively I should have shot the image at f/5.6 ISO 100 but was in a hurry to capture the moment before the light was gone.
