Nikon D700, Nikkor 200mm f4 AIS @ 1/1600 f11 ISO 200
The thought of being
stuck without a focal length, ruining the ability to get a shot, is a
common reason many people are tempted by the do it all zoom. As the
owner of not one but two 18-200mm lenses I've been there. I've also
been at the other end of the spectrum and found that limiting your
focal lengths can have large benefits too, because it makes you walk
around trying different angles to make your limited range work. On the
day I shot the above, for some odd reason I only brought a 20mm and
200mm lens, nothing in-between. With a big ranged zoom I don't think
there is any way I would have shot the above, it's not the first
framing of a very scenic drop that comes to mind, but it makes for a
nice image. As you can see from the exif I also under-exposed about a
stop for some reason. Thankfully with modern digital cameas this really
isn't an issue.
