Subtle detail
With the addition of the Nikon
D600 and Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 AF-S to my arsenal I noticed a nice subtle
update that Nikon has made to their equipment, but isn't mentioned in
reviews. Instead of a silkscreen dot to mark lens/body alignment, we
now have a little white rubber bump. Surprisingly it does making lens
mounting
faster and more intuitive. Little details like these are nice. I'd
trade the dot for an aperture ring/backwards compatability, but Nikon
abandoned that years ago.
On a side note, as I was highly anticipating the Sony A99, I've since
followed reviews and commentary on the camera. It's humorous that Sony
users are just raving about the sensor performance, while Nikon users
are not raving about the sensor performance of the D600. They both use
the same sensor. It's a great sensor, a very nice compromise of pixels,
dynamic range and high ISO performance. The reality is, Nikon users
have been using great sensors for quite some time while Sony has been
slower to update their cameras. Even if the pricing was even, the A99
is showing a huge drawback: start up time. Professional users demand
instant start up for their work cameras, and the A99 is just a bit slow
to start up and reflect changes.
