I
love reading and wish I was better at writing. Here are some recent
pieces that I found
interesting and am a bit jealous of.
It's amazing that with internet ADD an article has to call out being
800
odd words because otherwise I probably wouldn't finish it.
Michael
Lopp talks about content creation.
"Is there a Facebook update that
compares to building a thing? No, but I’d argue that 82
Facebook
updates, 312 tweets, and all those delicious Instagram updates are
giving you the same chemical impression that you’ve
accomplished
something of value. Whether it’s all the consumption or the
sense
of feeling busy, these micro-highs will never equal the high when
you’ve actually built."
Here is a great little piece by
Allen
Pike
about unprofessionalism. "The
behaviours that make us human are not
professional. Honesty, frankness, humour, emotionality, embracing the
moment, speaking up for what you believe, affection, sincerity."
Oddly enough the last two tie together quite well, perhaps because
the first is so snarky and full of foul language.
Maddox
covering his hate of Buzzfeed.
"When BuzzFeed writers deign to link
to sources, they often misattribute the content and link to the first
place they found it, rather than the origin. That'd be like overhearing
someone on a bus say, "Houston, we have a problem," and attributing it
to him."
The last is on a term that was new to me, Smarm.
Tom
Socca with a long
article that feels over my head at times.
"Smarm should be
understood as a type of bullshit, then—it expresses one
agenda,
while actually pursuing a different one. It is a kind of moral and
ethical misdirection. Its genuine purposes lie beneath the greased-over
surface."
Now
on to what I do (hopefully)
well, capturing moments of beauty with a camera.
