We love pristine wilderness and remote, untouched backcountry. The kayaking community is extraordinary aware about littering.
Yet the largest bits of garbage often are forgotten. It's bound to
happen. A boat (or worse) breaks in a remote location. In the moment,
recovery of the kayak is not as important as survival. Yet a gigantic
piece of trash is left in a pristine area. This page is a bit of a
wall of shame. These kayaks have been left by their owners for over a
year, which seems to be a reasonable amount of time to figure out
the logistics of recovery. If we don't police ourselves as a
community, eventually USFS and the Park Service will. Then we risk
access to some of the worlds best whitewater.
Charles King pinned on the
Devil's Postpile of the San Joaquin in 2011 and they were unable to
pull the boat out. Over the winter it was pulled into two pieces and is
now downstream a short distance.
Gareth Tate pitoned and broke an ankle in 2013 on the Devil's Postpile
of the San Joaquin River. A few days later Tayor Cavin pinned in the
same rapid as Charles King and paddled Gareth's kayak out. Who is now
responsible for the leftover kayak?
Know an eyesore that's been beside the river too long? Just get in touch to have it added here:
